Successful Completion of Specialized Training for the Use of the SkyRF System for CNS Measurements in Bosnia and Herzegovina

Experts from the Bosnia and Herzegovina Air Navigation Services Agency (BHANSA) have successfully completed specialized training on the use of the SkyRF® system—an advanced technology that enables precise CNS measurements using unmanned aerial vehicles. The training was held from 22 to 25 July 2025 in Mostar and Sarajevo, with the aim of equipping personnel for the application of advanced technologies in the field of technical support for navigation and surveillance systems. 

BHANSA is the first air navigation service provider (ANSP) in the region to initiate implementation activities for such a system, reaffirming its commitment to innovation and the adoption of modern solutions within aviation infrastructure. This initiative represents a significant step forward toward the modernization and digitalization of CNS system inspection procedures.

The training brought together experts in communication, navigation, and surveillance systems (CNS) as well as air traffic management (ATM), and was delivered through a combination of theoretical lectures and practical exercises on real equipment. During the practical sessions, measurements were conducted on actual systems—VOR/DME and ILS systems in Mostar, and the radar system in Sarajevo.

The training was delivered by experienced instructors from renowned international organizations—Intersoft Electronics from Belgium and Skyguide from Switzerland—who shared their knowledge and experience with local experts regarding the application of modern technologies in aviation infrastructure support.

The training also explored the potential to expand the application of advanced technologies to other systems, including advanced radar parameter measurements, verification of PAPI and ALS systems, and the collection and validation of terrain and obstacle data—key components for flight safety and procedure optimization.

This training marks step forward in the modernization and digitalization of CNS infrastructure testing and maintenance procedures in Bosnia and Herzegovina and confirms BHANSA's commitment to the continuous adoption of innovative solutions in accordance with international standards.  

What is SkyRF® and What Is It Used For?

SkyRF is a drone-based platform designed to provide measurement services for radio frequency (RF) signals to analyze the performance of communication, navigation, and surveillance (CNS) systems. Developed through a partnership between Intersoft Electronics Services and Skyguide, SkyRF uses specialized equipment and software designed for precise measurements of navigation and radar systems in the so-called far-field zone—beyond the immediate vicinity of the source. The system enables reliable, fast, and accurate measurements at higher altitudes, complements traditional ground-based measurements, and reduces the need for conventional flight inspections by up to 50%, resulting in significant savings in cost, CO₂ emissions, and operational disruptions.

The measurements obtained using the SkyRF system show a high correlation with the results of traditional flight inspections, ensuring a high level of accuracy and efficiency in the monitoring of CNS systems.
