The installation of a modernized MSSR Mode-S secondary radar system with integrated ADS-B antennas has been completed at the Jahorina radar site, and the system entered operational service on 17 July this year. This project is part of a broader process of technical enhancement of the air traffic surveillance system in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Preliminary technical results have demonstrated the high efficiency of the new system – an aircraft response probability of 99.75% was recorded, while the average deviation from the actual position measured only 4.9 meters.
Technical features of the system:
· new-generation of MSSR (Monopulse Secondary Surveillance Radar) Mode-S radar, capable of simultaneously tracking a large number of targets,
· integrated ADS-B (Automatic Dependent Surveillance–Broadcast) antennas for enhanced accuracy and extended coverage,
· new antenna system with a robust open-frame base, allowing easier access for maintenance,
· completely new radar dome (radome), designed to withstand all-season weather conditions on mountain Jahorina,
· radar-communication cabinets equipped with advanced diagnostic, management, and security systems,
· new local control panel for technical system monitoring.
Benefits and advantages:
· precise real-time aircraft identification and tracking,
· improved air traffic control safety and efficiency in the region,
· ADS-B signal provides an additional layer of surveillance and reduces the impact of the cone of silence, especially under complex weather and terrain conditions,
· the system enables remote control and continuous monitoring, reducing the need for constant on-site operator presence.
· enhanced interoperability with European and regional control centers.
The project was implemented by the company Unibox, with technical support from international aviation technology partners – Indra, Novalit, and PRS. The works were carried out in accordance with applicable international technical and safety standards.
The modernization of the radar system on Jahorina has ensured the conditions for stable and efficient operation of the new system, thus contributing to the safety and reliability of air traffic control in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
