Training of BHANSA employees for providing support after critical situations in air traffic has been conducted

BHANSA organized the training for providing support after critical situations in air traffic for air traffic controllers, as part of Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM) in Mostar, in the period from 26th - 28th October 2022.

Prof Lidija Arambašić, PhD  and prof. Branka Starc  psychologist and supervisor of psychosocial work were conducted the training, based on the contract concluded with the Society for Psychological Assistance from Zagreb. They are psychologists with 30 years of experience in conducting psychological crisis interventions.

17 employees of BHANSA participated in the training, namely 14 air traffic controllers from all air traffic control units, 2 psychologists and 1 employee of the Safety Office. 

During the training, participants were introduced to sources of professional stress, recognition of specific sources of professional stress for air traffic controllers, signs of professional stress and burnout syndrome at work, ways of dealing with stress, traumatic / crisis events in the area of air traffic control. In the following, it was discussed about experiences with receiving and providing support after stressful  /crisis situations at work, principles and skills of providing support during and after stressful / crisis situations, basic principles of the communication process and skills necessary for providing collegial support after critical situations in air traffic. The training leaders specifically demonstrated support after critical situations in air traffic, after which the training participants practiced providing that support. 

Upon completion of the training, the participants were presented with certificates of successfully completed training. It is planned that the provision of support after critical situations in air traffic for air traffic controllers will be formally introduced in BHANSA from the date 01st January 2023. This will bring BHANSA into compliance with requirement ATS.OR.310 Stress as part of Commission Regulation (EU) 2017/373 оf 1st March 2017 on establishing common requirements for air traffic management service providers / air navigation service providers and other ATM network functions and for their supervision.
